Golden Donuts 2007

Everyone loves lists, especially at this time of year. so, just in time for your christmas lists, here are the definitive albums and tracks of this year, with the dutch in orange (natch) and the rest of the world in green. so, in no particular order, here are the winners. the golden donuts are in the post...

the 10 best albums of 2007

arts the beatdoctor - transitions
whenever i'm feeling rough, this makes me feel better. arts came up with the perfect remedy for the blues and seasonal affectional disorder that seemed to plague 2007, and created a genuine banger along the way in 'the anthem'.

la melodia - vibing high
the unlikeliest nominees at the tmf awards sadly didn't turn out to be the shock winners we'd hoped, but they did put out a great LP and put on some of the rawest shows this year. when they come back in march with a full band, they'll be unstoppable.

moss - the long way back
it doesn't always have to be hip hop. moss might not be reinventing the wheel, but they write genuinely beautiful and affecting songs. and sometimes that's all you need.

pete philly and perquisite - remindstate
you'd be crazy to suggest that this is a better album than mystery repeats, but this makes the list because not only did pete and perq have the balls to remix a classic album, but they made it almost as good as the original, and in some cases - stand up the c&k remix of respect - it even surpassed it.

pax and pry - a day at the office
forget in rainbows, this was the free download of the year that was worth its weight in gold. hip hop from the heart to move your feet and leave your head spinning.

k-os - atlantis: hymns for disco
one of the first albums of the year and i'm still bumping it. k-os took his mix of reggae, psychedelia and hiphop to its apogee for his best album yet.

burial - untrue
lord knows how to describe dubstep, but fuck me, it's good.

mr hudson and the library - a tale of two cities
if you fell in or out of love this year, you needed this album. and anyone who integrates steel drums into their sounds deserves some sort of award.

oh no - dr no's oxperiment
blending turkish, italian, lebanese, and greek funk to make one glorious mess. this year's donuts? don't even start...

the aliens - astronomy with dogs
i could have gone for a lot of things here - kweli's eardrum, but it's just a bit too long, tinariwen's album, but that would make me look a bit wanky, jamie t, but he was too much of a twat at lowlands, pharoah monche's desire, but it was just a bit disappointing. so i went with an album that just made me happy - the aliens, who rose from the ashes of the beta band to create an album that had the consistency that their previous material always lacked.
