perCeptie

With every good record there’s a point where you go from just liking it and appreciating its quality to a moment when you connect with it so much that it doesn’t let you go again. My epiphany with perCeptie’s debut album came in the shower one morning. The juddering flute line on Kruistocht shook me out of my coma and actually had me throwing shapes in the bathroom. After that I couldn’t tear myself away until the end of the album, making me a good hour late for work. And that’s been the pattern ever since, although now it’s on my iPod, I’m only 20 minutes late. So what makes it so irresistible?

After much cogitation, I’ve come to the firm conclusion that I’m not entirely sure. It could be Inf’s sterling production, which ranges from the sweet soul of the closing track perCeptie to the deceptively simple, but equally effective, backdrop of flute, bass and beat on Bleep Bleep. It could be the heavenly trumpet with which Kyteman blesses Op de Uitkijk and Overgeleverd. Ultimately, it’s the man himself, perCeptie, who ties the album together. He’s got a raw flow which switches seamlessly from energetic bangers like De Bomshit to more reflective tracks like the beautiful melancholy of Op De Uitkijk. The album is perfectly sequenced to express this range, so that while you get caught up in the emotion of each track the following track either follows it smoothly or has the strength to pull you into its own field. So Op de Uitkijk sits comfortably alongside the relentlessly upbeat Tis Gewoon Lekker and Bleep Bleep slips effortlessly into the more reflective De Kwestie.

It also means that the best tracks vary depending on your mood, although De Gave’s ridiculously funky bassline is always a winner, as is the grand finale perCeptie, where perC teases the listener with his departure before roaring back to close the album in style over the tastiest of breaks. Just as perC can’t resist the temptation to flow over Inf’s beats one more time, you’ll be reaching for the play button as soon as it finishes. But make sure you don’t put it on before you go to work…
